Influenza A....

Yes, we have been hit with the dreaded Influenza A.

*Sigh*

Let me tell you, this stuff is terrible!!! I had the flu shot and was able to start on Tamiflu early on so I have had it much less than Cade, but oh my goodness.....this stuff packs a wallop!!!

Poor little Cade...he is on his 7th day of fevers, coughing, headaches, and stomach cramps. Bless his sweet little heart! He seems to be a little better today, but as we have learned with this junk, anything can happen.

Best advice that we were given: STAY HOME if you have been exposed and show some symptoms. You are contagious for 24-48 hours after your fever AND your aches have stopped. This means that you don't go anywhere if you are still taking any kind of med for relief. I had never heard of that before, so it was good to know.

Stay hydrated and just lay around. NO problem there...=)

For now, we are locked in the house with the "Quarantine" flag flying! =) Aaron still seems unaffected. We thought he may be coming down with something, but it was nothing.

Have a super day! We will do the same!

These are a few of my favorite things.....

A while back, someone wrote and asked if I could put down a few of my favorite things as far as cleaners go. I am probably way behind the times on this, but it is never to late to start!  Most of you probably already do this, and knew this,  but to the few who don't and for you who have asked- enjoy! =)

-Dry Laundry Detergent: 2 cups Fels Naptha Soap (shredded)
                               1 Cup Washing Soda
                               1 Cup Borax

Mix it up in a large bowl; pour into a sealed container, and use 1 Tablespoon per load. Cleans, smells, and works great! A little OC (organizationally concerned)  =) on this, but on the outside of my container, I use a "Command Picture Hanging strip/hook" and hang my Teaspoon on that. Works great and it never gets lost.

-Fabric Softener: Vinegar in a Downy Ball. Along with the (obvious) Bounce Bar or Dryer sheets.

Removes the musty/water smell from the clothes and towels and always smells fresh!

-Shower cleaner: The verdict is out on this one. I LOVE the smell of a clean bathroom, but have NEVER found anything healthy with which to use to remove soap scum from the shower/tub floor....until now. I use baking soda and then pour Lemon Juice over that to begin fizzing. Let it set for about 10 minutes, and take a brush and scrub away. At first I will admit....I had some serious work to do, but maintaining it is a breeze! Smells great too!
-Shower/glass doorsNew or used fabric softener sheets; slightly dampened they remove all of the soap scum and also leave a protective layer of resistance from build up forming. Awesome!

-Multipurpose cleaner: While white vinegar works great on everything, there is the skeptic in all of us that says "does this really CLEAN well?" The answer is yes! Mirrors, toilets, tubs/showers, sinks, garbage disposals, etc. vinegar and water are great. (for the garbage disposal I freeze white vinegar in ice cube trays and send them through every other week.)

-Another Multipurpose/Disinfectant cleaner that I use is this: 2 teaspoons Borax
                                                                        1/2 teaspoon Washing Soda
                                                                        2 Tablespoons Lemon Juice
                                                                        4 Tablespoons White Vinegar
                                                                        3 Cups HOT Water

Dissolve the dry ingredients into the hot water and then add the rest of the liquid. Pour into a large spray bottle and you're done.

Mirrors/Windows: Vinegar and water

Voila! A healthier and inexpensive way to live.

A Little bit of this and that....

I always wonder what happens to time....it is here today and gone in seconds- literally! I would love to give an excuse of why I haven't written, but I will spare you the time and post some pictures of fun and busyness that we have been keeping company with....

Here is the little cheese with his good buddy Laren. Laren spent the night so he could go rollerskating. They tirelessly played with legos, trios, games and forts. They would have giggled at the last word in the sentence. We have gotten to the age where any kind of bathroom humor or words that sound like are simply hilarious!

Here they are weighing the odds.

Right before we left we took this one....I should have taken a picture prior to skating. I would love to  say that my hair looks like that from the wind blowing through it as I gracefully glided around the skating rink, but hotflashes and skating crashes are probably the more accurate culprit. Oh well....here's to life!

This picture just cracks me up! We did this a LOT. LOL! Aaron had me about doubled over when he took his first go round. If you can imagine.....arms waving up in down in no particular rythym (for balance, of course!), while his feet are quickly "stepping" irratically and then of course we have the moving the torso move....back and forth, back, back, forward. I was no better, I assure you! We loved laughing at each other try to skate after what....15-20 years???

Here are a few pictures from Cade's recent field trip. I know...I'm on a roll with these pictures this morning!!! This is the best shot I could get without the boys putting bunny ears up on each other, pushing the girls, or yes...Cade's personal favorite...someone farting.

Isn't this sink SO COOL???

This is Cade's little girlfriend Caitlyn. Isn't she adorable?

I know I look scared here, but we really did have a great time! I love helping as a room mom assistant! So much fun....I wouldn't trade it for anything!

And before I end....Cade wanted to show you 2 pictures of Ella...his little puppy who isn't so little anymore, and who is actually about 25 lbs bigger than from this recent picture.

Ella has her "I've been naughty" face on....as she is laying down trying to sip from Aaron's drink, or what used to be his drink.

Isn't she a sweetie???

There is never a dull moment around here and I am beginning to love it. And just so you know....

-Aaron's tests all came back GREAT! They will ck him again in 6 months (thyroid)
-Cade's report card was ALL A+'s...he made the honor roll again.
-My random blood work revealed that my cancer number has dropped a total of 3 points since last month! I am now at a 13!!! So thankful! (normal is below 35)
-Aaron's dad is doing better....still not sure whether he has cancer or a serious degenerative bone dz.
-Snow should be coming any day...
-I am learning to keep on running, perservering, not looking back.
-We are all wishing you a wonderful day...full of blessings. Don't look back...the best is yet to come.
Until then...enjoy the little bits of "this and that".

Chargers vs The War Horse

I loved this email that I was sent and I had to share it. I thought about my earlier post and I just loved how this applies to so many of us. A great reminder to keep the faith, keep persevering and stay focused!!!
Erin

2012 is going to be the year of the War Horse, but to understand this   we must first understand what a war horse is. In years past, when   cavalries were common, generals would lead their troops into battle   mounted on their "chargers." From Bucephalus to Traveler, famous   chargers left their marks on history.

Horses have not been widely used in battle since World War I though   both horses and mules saw limited use in World War II. They have been   barely used since then though Special Forces adapted to the use of   horses in the early stages of the war in Afghanistan.

My hometown of Miles City, Montana was historically a famous source   for cavalry horses. Fort Keogh, located just west of town, was one of   the primary U.S. Remount Stations during World War I. In fact, it can be   argued that more horses destined for warfare have been shipped from   Miles City, Montana than anywhere. The only other place that could rival   us would be Fort Robinson in Nebraska. Fort Keogh was named for Captain   Myles Keogh who died with Custer at the Little Big Horn. But, it was   Keogh's horse, Comanche, that though severely wounded, was the lone   survivor of Custer's Last Stand. Custer's horse, incidentally, was named   "Vic."

The U.S. Remount program had a large influence in this area and throughout the West when the government upgraded ranch bloodlines by  importing blue-blooded horses from the east to cross on western range  mares. The history of the Remount Service is chronicled in the book War   Horse by my friend Phil Livingston (co-authored by Ed Roberts). Another   book, Horse Soldiers, tells the story of the Special Forces using horses   in Afghanistan, and of course, some of you have already seen the   Stephen Spielberg film, War Horse, which is adapted from a children's   story set during World War I.

Chargers vs. the War Horse

In the photo below is our grandson, Creed Alexander Ferguson, on our   retired gelding "Shiloh Glory." Shiloh, as we call him, was born in 1985   during the height of our first home-church ministry. His dam was a   registered Quarter Horse mare with famous running bloodlines. This   "bottom side" – as the mare's pedigree is called in America – carried   the blood of Rocket Bar, Hard Twist, Go Man Go, and other famous   sprinters. She had the blood of "chargers."

But, we must understand that a "charger" and a "War Horse" are not necessarily the same thing today.

We  all know "Chargers" of sorts. And, if we are humble, many of us   can confess to being Chargers. Chargers are warlike, militant, martial,   and confident. They rush straight ahead at the slightest hint of battle.   Famous battles, including Fetterman's Massacre in Wyoming, have been   lost because Chargers charged ahead prematurely.

Chargers  are great at arousing the troops, drawing their swords,   blowing the bugle, and spurring straight into combat. They are not so   great at planned tactics, strategy, and coolness under fire. A Charger   often knows only how to charge, but a true War Horse knows how to handle   himself in combat.

The "top side" of Shiloh Glory's pedigree is all Remount blood. His   sire, Gold N Glory was by Mizpah Glory, and all this blood traces back   to a once well-established Remount program south of Miles City.

Years ago we entertained a young woman from ABC Sports. She was a top   rider on the east coast jumper circuit. The first time she rode Shiloh,   who was a young five-year-old at the time, she called him a "war   horse." A good rider, no matter what their discipline, knows it when   they are mounted on a war horse. "Shiloh" has many meanings in the   Hebrew. It was, of course, a meeting place with God, but the word – derived from its root, Strong's #7951 – can mean "safety, tranquility,   happiness, and prosperity." Our Shiloh, the gelding above, was   officially retired in 2010. We took him out of retirement briefly this   summer for the grandkids, but war horses are not baby-sitters. Even in   his advanced years, Shiloh's heart beats for the charge. He listens for   bugles, not lullabies.

Actually, I considered putting Shiloh down this fall. His knees are   arthritic and he gets thin in cold weather, but it seemed, in spite of   all odds, that Shiloh was to see the year 2012. Because 2012 is the year   of the War Horse.

All prey animals, but especially horses, have a "fight or flight"   instinct. The "charge straight ahead" attitude of many "Chargers," can   actually be a flight instinct rather than a fight instinct. It is not   uncommon for insecure people to mask their insecurities with   aggressiveness. Again, it is not the white-hot charge that is a measure   of boldness as it is the calm perseverance of composure under fire.

2012, for the Body of Christ, will be the Year of the War Horse. But   make no mistake about it, it will not be the rash and brash who are   ridden to victory. It will be the calm, collected, and cooly courageous.

"Sleep, soldiers! still in honored rest
 Your truth and valor wearing;
The bravest are the tenderest, --
 The loving are the daring."

from The Song of the Camp
 by Bayard Taylor.

Wound Tightly....

Do you ever find yourself so wound tight that you feel like a rubberband about to snap in two?
Yesterday was a day like that for me. I mean I had a throw your hands in the air, stomp in place, adult sized fit. Yep. Pretty bad.

The Roto-Rooter guy came out to attempt to fix what the other one didn't and left without doing a thing. While on the phone with them, they hung up on me twice and the kind *ahem* gentleman told me that it was useless to be upset about their "delays" and it was perfectly normal for them to have me wait since 9am (the time that THEY THEMSELVES set up) until 3:05pm ( but who's counting?) when he actually shows up.

Poor man didn't know what hit him when he got here. I was completly calm, but I asked him to put the shoe on the other foot: After you have been waiting since last Thursday, with STANDING sewage in your basement, paying $700+ and still no answers- wouldn't you be a little be put out as well? He agreed and then told me to call the sewer clean out people again. Brave soul

So here we sit. Almost a week later. Nothing has changed except my attitude. I realized after I got so mad I was shaking. Shaking people...over the sewer problem. Wow. I had no idea that I was wound so tight. I felt like losing it for sure earlier in the day, but after attending Mom's In Touch I felt relieved. Better. The calm confrontation could probably be attributed to that.

My heart gets so caught off guard these days. I have to let the Lord have firm control over my emotions. No, not because of Menopause, but because of fears, and simply being overwhelmed by life and family issues that no one but the Lord can dissolve. I dislike almost every part of it, but that is what he has given me. It is my choice how I live with them, but this moment is all we really have.

James writes: "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that  you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." James 1:2-4

Do I really want to lose it over the septic system? Seriously Erin, get a grip! I take comfort in the fact that scripture tells us to "consider it." Obviously someone else needed to be reminded. Hopefully another mom like myself, working to be a godly wife, mother, friend, sister, daughter, etc.

I don't want to be so wound tight. I don't want to lack anything. In order for perseverance to finish it's work, I must keep on keeping on with what I have been given and consider it joy. Pure joy. Wound tightly with faith in Jesus, the perfector.

The "sTinkIn" Basement!....

As promised, here are some random and not so random photos.

No, the basement is not finished, but you will get the picture (literally, hehe!) when you see them.

These are the before....I couldn't get anymore to down load. Now, for the after......

I don't usually decorate with a Wet/Dry Vac, nor do I use a compressor and nail gun to accessorize, but hey...what can you do? You see, the trim for the ceiling and the rest of the room came to a screeching halt when our basement utility room filled with SEWAGE!!!! Ahghghghgh! I wish I was kidding.
I have come to terms and now live at peace with my new found friend.

The Vaccum.
This is a picture of the "post-clean-up". Gross...I know. Bleach does a wonderful work too. Smells a little fresher than well, ....you know...

Anyhow, I was going to post some more but am unable to pull them off my camera right now. We have been fighting our wireless connection/internet all week. Will post them soon. Perhaps after the sewer-guy leaves. Until then...

Blessings!

Dreading and Treading.....

If you all are like me, each year starts off with some resolutions. The first one always being that THIS is THE YEAR where I will actually stick to the resolutions and do them. Ha!!!! Many more follow, often mimicking the years before it. Oh how I LONG to have the stamina to keep it up this year...To see it through...to accomplish something great. Just this once. Any of my thoughts resonate with yours yet?

Each year I start off with not only the resolutions but a word for the year. Last year was OVERCOME. The Lord did and is doing mighty things. Never let me understate that this and everything is ALL about HIM.
Later in the week (prior to Christmas) I was speaking with a sweet pastors wife. We were discussing kids, fun, and just laughter when someone lovingly told her that I was a cancer survivor. "Great," I thought "here goes another one." You see, most of the time when others find this out about me, they do one of two things....turn around and walk away as if I have the plague, or they treat me as if I am a burden.

This sweet woman stopped abruptly and looked me in the eye and squeezed  my hand so hard and said these words I will never forget: "Erin, I have a message for you that I have often told my children. I want you to never be like Lot's wife and look back. Don't forsake the deliverance of the Lord. DON'T LOOK BACK!"

I will NEVER love exercise, but it is something that I have had to discipline myself to do for life. It is good for me, it fights cancer, and it helps prevent the return of cancer as well. So, I walk, waddle, run, jog and often trip my way on the treadmill, and I dispise it but NEVER have I regretted finishing my workout- or any workout. The rewards are priceless.

That being said, I often use the time I am on the treadmill to pray and seek wisdom from the Lord. To risk sounding overspiritual I will admit that I have to have scripture or something in front of me because I become distracted as time wears on. Well suffice it to say that one day I was walking...every sound and object captured my attention and before I knew it I had hit the side of the treadmill floor- the part that WAS NOT MOVING- and well, you understand the picture.....not pretty.

This candid reminder brought back the words from my sweet pastor friend, about not looking back. For some that is a no brainer, but for this wandering woman of faith I often need these heaven touching earth moments to realize just what the Lord is saying to me.

As this year begins I am filled with hope, because I am learning (through painful experience) to not look back. Realign my focus to what HE is doing. To not forsake the deliverance of the Lord, like Lot's wife.

To spare you a bruise or two and some awesome road rash I would encourage you to do the same. Lot's wife became a pillar of salt. Don't believe me? Check it out...her story starts and ends in Gen. 19. This year, resolve to keep your eyes and your heart focused on Jesus, not paralyzed on something from the past or allow your current situation to hold you captive.

Deliverance is one decision and one step away....Don't look back.
